Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5:3
Celebrate Recovery is a Christ-centered recovery program that is based on the beatitudes (Matthew 5:3-16). In CR there are eight recovery principles. The very first principle is based on Matthew 5:3. That principle reads, realize I’m not God; I admit that I am powerless to control my tendency to do the wrong thing and that my life is unmanageable.
The Believers Bible Commentary States, “the poor in spirit are those who acknowledge their own helplessness and rely on God’s omnipotence. They sense their spiritual need and find it supplied in the Lord.”
The polar opposite of today’s verse would be a sense of I’ve got this.
Before we came to know the Lord we were plotting our own course. We took pride in ourselves, we lived for today, it was all about us. The Bible describes this mentality as being, “lovers of their own selves.” 2 Timothy 3:1-2
Until we realize that we can’t go it alone we will not have the peace and comfort of knowing God’s got this. A common sentiment comes to mind that goes, “know God know peace, no God no peace.”
What are some of the character traits of someone who is poor in spirit?
- A sense of humility that puts others ahead of themselves- Philippians 2:3. Make others your priority and lift them up. Leave your selfish ambitions behind.
- When you’re doing a charitable act you don’t look for recognition. It shouldn’t be “look at me” but instead look what God has done through me- Matthew 6:1-4.
- Knows that God will meet all their needs and does not have fear or anxiety about what tomorrow has in store for them- Philippians 4:6-7.
- Doesn’t feel a need to be right, but rather has a need to be right with almighty God- Philippians 2:4-6.
- Is gentle in Spirit 2 Timothy 2:25.
When we live as though we are poor in Spirit, we are already rich beyond all measure.
Above all, I pray that you will have that Spirit living in you, now and always.
